Coach Sean leading On Ramp, take charge and change your life sign up for the June On Ramp or jump into a private On Ramp today, you'll be glad you did.....

From Coach Sean:

For most people one of the hardest things to do is look in the mirror, and I don't mean due to physical appearance (though that can make it a little difficult sometimes).  The reason this is difficult, at least for me, is because when I look in the mirror I'm forced to confront myself.  I'm sure most people get like this sometimes.  Did I try my hardest?  Did I push through pain?  Can I hold my head up knowing that I honestly gave my all, or did I cave because things got a little difficult.

When I look in the mirror at night one of the questions I always have to ask myself is "what did I do to improve myself today".  Whether its setting a new PR in the gym, studying and understanding a new concept, or learning new information, there has to be something.  I never feel more useless than a day when I accomplish nothing.  Simply existing is unacceptable (Ex: participation trophies) and I like to imagine most people feel the same way, but people watching for more than 5 minutes disproves that.
And it's not really ability that's important, its the effort put into it.  I am just as happy when someone moves from jumping pullups to green band pullups as I am when someone learns to string together muscle ups, because the effort is there.  You'll never get better by just showing up and existing.  Next time you look in the mirror, try and be honest with yourself.  Did you put the effort in to improve yourself, or were you satisfied with just taking up space?

6:30pm at the start of "Jackie".....

From Coach Trish:

We all have days when we’re in a rut.  We all have days when we don’t want to go to the gym.  We all have days when it’s way too easy to cave in and grab one of those donuts that a coworker brought in.  We all have those days.  We’re all human.

But it’s days like these that are more important than ever to stay on track.  To get to the gym.  To exercise self control and eat what you brought for lunch and not indulge in those tasty temptations.

You might feel like the daily grind has gotten the best of you and you don’t have the energy for the gym.  But you will feel better after your workout.  Guarantee your head will be cleared of whatever is bringing you down.  It’s amazing what a grueling WOD and  good sweat can do for the psyche.

You might feel like that impulse purchase from the vending machine will give you the little boost that you need to get through your day.  But it won’t satisfy you nearly as much as knowing that you can and WILL resist the urge.  Leave the leftover birthday cake on the table for a weaker individual, not me, though.  I’m not eating it.

You might have a million excuses why you don’t want to go to the gym.  I’m tired.  My allergies are bothering me.  The weather is bringing me down.  I’ve got too many other errands to run.  Put yourself on a schedule and commit to getting to the gym on those days.  For one hour a day, work out like it’s your job.

It’s those days when you feel the worst, that you probably actually need it the most.  Keep the diet dialed, and get to the gym.  Guarantee they’ll be someone here glad to see you :)

Saturdays free intro, be sure to spread the word.....

Is this not the most disgusting thing you have ever seen. How can "fitness facilties" (using that term loosely) honestly offer this at their establishment. This is everything that is wrong with the modern fitness world. They offer a nice package for a gym full of useless equipment and equally useless "trainers" (again using that term loosely). I am proud to offer a system that works and a system where we actually care about your well being. How can you offer health and provide poison on a clear conscious? This is just my little rant about the modern fitness industry, I am proud that CFH does not fall into that category. We offer real fitness, real results, and have a system in place to provide you with longevity, health, and well being. (Sorry but we do not offer Pop-Tarts)..... not that I'm knocking delicious Pop-Tarts but they do not belong within the walls of any fitness institution that claims to provide a health service. Happy to be out of the world of the big box gyms and into the real fitness world.

May On Rampers in their journey to CFH members, thinking about joining? Do not miss out, sign up today. The hardest step is getting in the door.....

-Have you checked in on your goals? I see a lot of completed goals on the whiteboard and some that have dates that have passed. Be sure to update if you have met your goals or re-assess if you missed your date. A simple system for goals is the SMART checklist:

  • S = Specific
  • M = Measurable
  • A = Attainable
  • R = Realistic
  • T = Timely

Specific- don't be broad (i.e. get faster) set something that you can implement a specific plan to achieve it. Measurable- be sure to have a goal that you track progress for to see where your going and how far you've come. Attainable- be sure it is within your grasp, if you want a bodyweight overhead squat do you have the shoulder flexiblity and strength to get there? Realistic- this is tough but sometimes the best goals are not the flashy ones, maybe instead of the Muscle Up you work for 3 deadhang pull ups and ring dips and go from there. Timely- be sure that the goal has a timeframe you can make that will keep you in check and set you up for success. Sometimes smaller goals are the way to go on the road to the big ones, sit down write them out and put a plan in place then stick to it. If you are unsure ask a coach, everyone has goals and getting them out there and making them known will help hold you accountable and keep you on the right path.

Brian working hard.....

From Coach Sean:

Recently I was killing time by randomly searching the Internet, and I came across CrossFit New England's "My Gym" video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6M1Qi1w8iPs).  This got me thinking of all the ways that CFH is different from other gyms, to include other CrossFit gyms.  Obviously there are a ton of things that I could talk about, but I'll just touch on a few that stand out to me.

The biggest way CFH stands out from other types of gyms is community.  I'm sure at one point or another everyone has joined a gym for 10 dollars a month with every intention of getting into great shape.  How long did that last?  Two months? Three?  Even if you were there longer, eventually the majority of people stop going and forget that they even have a membership.  One of the biggest reasons for this is that no one is there to hold you accountable.  When most people go to these gyms they put on headphones or stare at the TV screen in front of them.  Its easy to give up in this kind of atmosphere because if you're not there no one will notice anyway.  CFH is different.  Countless times I've heard people ask where so and so is, or seen posts on Facebook asking about someone if they haven't been in for a few days.  It's much harder to skip when you know people notice.  It's also much harder to quit on yourself during a workout if you know that other people are there, suffering through the same workout as you.
That brings me to another area which may be less obvious but is incredibly important,  and that is the programming.  This is something that even separates CFH from other CrossFit gyms.  While some of you may not realize it, there is an incredible amount of time and planning that goes into programming for the gym.  I've seen Eric writing out the program and it is very impressive to hear him explain the science and rationale behind the workouts.  This is different from some (though not all) other CrossFit gyms, which look as if they tossed a few darts at the wall and created a triplet or tried to copy programming without actually understanding how to implement it correctly.  This is why the coaches are constantly reminding you to pay attention to the clock and rep scheme.  You've also probably heard us encourage you to use a weight that elicits a certain response for a certain workout.  As much as it pains me to say it, using heavy weight is not always the answer.
The last thing I want to talk about is also the one that attracts people the most to CrossFit; the result.  By consistently coming to class and following the programming, you can pretty much guarantee that you will see amazing results.  Even people who join thinking they are "in shape" will be amazed at how much their performance improves.  Physical appearance will also greatly improve, and lets be honest, everyone wants that.  Almost anyone who has been a member can attest to the improvement they have seen.  Compare these results to the results you saw when you were a member at a globo gym and you'll see that I'm right.
If anyone reading this is on the fence about joining or seeing what CFH is all about, I strongly encourage you to check it out.  The community, programming and results will be unlike anything you've experienced before.  I promise that after a few months you won't be able to believe how far you've come and what you've achieved.
